Passguard CEO Tom Leijte interviewed in podcast by RTL journalist Daniël Verlaan

Nov 12, 2025

Passguard CEO Tom Leijte recently joined a podcast hosted by RTL journalist Daniël Verlaan, where they discussed the growing impact of infostealer malware and the business model behind it.

In the conversation, Tom explains why infostealers have become such an effective and dangerous threat. Unlike traditional attacks that focus on stealing passwords, infostealers target active sessions, including session tokens and session cookies. This allows attackers to access systems without having to log in again, often without raising any immediate alarms.

Why infostealers are so hard to spot
Because this type of access looks like normal user activity, organisations may remain unaware that something is wrong until real damage has already been done. According to Tom, this is exactly what makes infostealers so appealing to attackers and so challenging for defenders.

The business behind the malware
The episode also dives into the economics of infostealers. Tom explains how they are offered through a Malware as a Service model, where different actors develop, sell and deploy the malware. This setup makes sophisticated attacks available to a much larger group of criminals and helps explain the rapid growth of infostealer activity.
